Andrew at TAFCA

Andrew Newton has had an excellent result in the TAFCA Individual Allegro in Dundee, he finished on 4½ from 6 games, his performance will be approximately 2050 for the event.
I would like to take some credit for this result as Andrew spent many a club night scoring wins against my Philidor Defense which convinced me to play something else!

A game from David

I have another game for you to study, again it is well annotated by David Cumming.
I am also pleased to announce that the Chess Club is open again from Wednesday, we have been closed for a few weeks while the hotel has been re-furbished.
The venue is looking fantastic so pop along if you can to Chess at the Chieftain.

More From Dundee

I am pleased to say that Jan has sent me 3 of his games from Dundee.
This was Jan,s first OTB tournament and he was very unsure how he would cope with the longer time controls, as previously stated, it didn't bother him at all.
The games were never going to be draws!
I have also added another game from our Internet Champ!,David Cumming.
I hope you enjoy the games as much as I did:

A Giant Killer!

As promised, here is a game from the recent Dundee Minor tournament.
This game won David the "Giant Killer" prize.
The game goes in favour of both players on and off throughout the game but David gets the point!
Jan Barron-Majerik came in 2nd equal in his first tournament and is going to send me some games for the blog as soon as he has recovered!,he is more used to playing Blitz chess and was concerned he wouldn't do well with the longer time control, the opposite seems to have happened

More Games from Kai and David

I have another few excellent games to add to our blog, first is from Kai Pannwitz who played in the recent Lothians Congress.
In this first game v an 1800 opponent Kai was 3 pawns up but got into bad time trouble which cost him the game.
It is a good to see how he managed to get into such a good position:

A Games Bonaza!

I have 4 excellent games for the blog this time round, 3 from Kai Pannwitz who recently played for Scotland in the European Youth Championship in Prague.
I also have another well annotated game by David Cumming played on the internet.
Thank you to David and Kai for letting me post their games.

The first game is from Kai who almost beat his higher rated opponent but made an unfortunate error just a few moves from success:

Organizers Required :0)

The club has reached a stage now where we would like to introduce more coaching and tournaments.
Our reason for not doing so is because we have so few adults who can commit to attending/coaching on a regular basis.
The committee have discussed this and have agreed, in principle, that if we can form a group of adult volunteers who can fill this criteria we could then announce our intentions in the paper and hopefully invite more members.
We have the only registered club in the North of Scotland, we have an excellent venue, more than enough equipment, we also host the largest annual junior tournament in the area, there is no reason we cannot be a more successful club, enter the Scottish National Chess League, and  host weekly tournaments within the club, we only need more adults!

It is amazing how many players there are in the area and are registered with the Scottish Chess Association, and on Chess.com!, it would be brilliant to see more of them at the club.
I must take this opportunity to thank the adults who already turn up as often as they can, in some cases every week, to open up the club and generally ensure we are always open, they also coach new members and run the very successful monthly Blitz tournament.

If anyone wants to contact me you can reach me through the club website .

I hope we will be in a position to announce new tournaments/coaching etc.; we just need to pass on the word we are looking for support to carry out the clubs ambitions and promote chess in the Highlands.

This is a game played by Andrew Newton in the Glasgow Open. It is unusual to see Whites opening played in Opens but shows that you have to be prepared!, Andrew said he was not sure of the "book" line but he played very accurately to win this game:

Here is a rare game from our regular Blitz Champion, Andrew Newton, I managed to get it from his opponent, George Pyrich, thank you George!. It is a game that is typical of Andrews style, not for him the easy route. The middle game was very stable but then it all kicked off, George missed a winning move and Andrew recovered to win.
